My Law School Story: The Beginning

My story in law school: It was never easy

This blog post is a journal of my journey to becoming a Corporate Lawyer. I will do my best to add updates in my free time.

I am ready to study law. I have my schedule posted on my bedroom wall.

I went to Jose Maria College (JMC) Foundation, Inc. in Davao City, hoping I could enter the campus and experience the ambiance of the College of Law. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to enter the campus. So I just asked about my school I.D., face-to-face, and boarding house (room for rent) nearby.

It was a sunny day at around 10 in the morning. It was so hot, but I walked 300 meters to LPU town Davao and then rode a tricycle to arrive at Empress Subdivision (where I will stay for a month or more).

It was very challenging to find an affordable but conducive room for rent. Thankfully, I met a tricycle driver from my hometown, Loreto, Agusan del Sur. I was about to give up looking in that area until he took the initiative by calling the owner of a house with available rooms for rent. The owner opened the door and brought me to the room with a vacancy.

I joined a lecture on Criminal Law via Zoom. The invitation was from the Assistant Dean of JMC College of Law, Atty. Resci. It was good timing because I could compare the internet speed in my hometown (Loreto, Agusan del Sur) and my school's location (Davao City).

Atty. Resci sent an email for the Freshmen to join a lecture via Zoom. The topic is Judicial and legal Ethics with Atty. Ma. Tanya Karina A. Lat is the Resource Speaker. The talk began at around six in the evening. It was one of the best law lectures I have attended (so far). Atty. Tanya inspired me to become a good lawyer.

I went to JMCFI to attend the face-to-face orientation for all law students of JMCFI.

At last. I was able to experience the facilities of JMCFI. It was a great first impression. The staff, faculty, and the Dean of the College of Law are very accommodating.

I paused law school, but I am preparing for next semester. I enrolled in an online course with a 1:1 lecture with a top-notch lawyer in the Philippines.

So far, I have passing grades. I passed the subject Criminal Law 1 under the most feared Attorney. Almost, if not all law students who were under her before always say "good luck" when asked about her. She's a professor who doesn't want to have a lot of students. She has this thing we call clearing operations. I became a victim of this process. My name was removed from the attendance sheet after my first and last absence. I was never absent after that incident because of my anxiety. I was able to convince Attorney through my three- or four-pages letter which looks like a journal similar to this post with photos to serve as evidence. We cannot lie to lawyers, especially to her whose previous work was reading people giving testimony. She was trained to determine lies from truth.

I aimed for higher grades, but law school is truly a tough journey. It became more difficult because of my full-time job. Added to that are my personal and financial problems.

I thought I will regret my decision of taking halt studying law, but I think I will never regret it.

If I enrolled this semester, I won't be able to check on my mental, emotional, and physical health. The comments of the people saying that I become very thin were ignored because I thought I just looked thin, but sadly, they were right. I lost three kilograms (or more) in my six months of hustling in work and law school.

I would have not evaluated my physical, mental, and emotional well-being if I continued to the second semester. I never felt like my head is going to explode before. That's what I felt after the final exams.

It took weeks before my heart, head, and body felt good. I stopped drinking neurotonic (a term that my neurologist is not familiar with) too. I believe it's not good for me because it made me more restless. I followed my neurologist's advice of eating well and getting enough sleep because nothing can revitalize a human's body and brain other than those.

I'm still waiting for my grades in three subjects including one which is a prerequisite of the Obligations and Contracts subject.
