Managerial Essay Questions: My Answer

The standards of hiring managers have heightened as technology advances and innovation became the norm in the corporate world.

If you are aiming for a great company, be prepared for any kind of exam they may give.

To be invited for a job interview by a worldwide company that is living for more than 40 years is a great privilege but it's not that easy except if you'll include politics in it. That is based on my experience. I was very ambitious when I started my journey after graduation. My goal was to work for an international food company. I sent my application online to reduce the cost of the application process. A week or two after, I received an e-mail from the company with instructions on their hiring procedure. The preliminary test was about English proficiency, analogy, mathematical, behavioral and others (which I already forgot). That test has a time limit so many of my answers are based on wise guessing, except those questions on a personality test. After succeeding in that exam, an essay question was inserted in another e-mail they sent. The content of the essay exam and my answer are written below. My essay has many errors if you'll strictly follow the rules in English writing but I am not perfect, I did not study English that much and English is not my first language. I think some errors are good in some cases.

I came from a poor family but my father's parents were not really poor. He had even studied law in San Beda  but graduated in San Sebastian (if I'm not mistaken) but his anger to his father and of course his love for our family, he left that comfortable life and chose the life of my mother which they called "isang kahig, isang tuka". Because of poverty, I became interested in the food business at the age of six. I started selling Choco balls (now commonly known as munchkins) due to the influence of my childhood friend who has a sari-sari store. With the help of my mother, I learned to produce the food and sold them in school. We were able to earn a thousand or more but because I was afraid my father will find out what I was doing (because he was against it before probably because of his pride) I was forced to use the money to buy a stroller bag as he suggested for the school opening. That money was not just mine because my two childhood friends have a share in that venture so I have to take responsibility. That mistake made me sacrificed my ten pesos allowance ( intended for riding a tricycle in going home) to pay my partners. Our house is quite far from school but I have to face the consequences of that decision. I guess that was a blessing in disguise because through that, I have realized the importance of trust in business. Though we stopped our venture, our friendship did not end there. I did not stop selling also. I became the sales agent of my grade one teacher who is very business-minded too. When there are snacks that were not sold in the classroom, I brought them outside and sell to other pupils at a higher level.

When I entered high school, I found a friend who was poorer than me. I often treat her snacks and lunch but there are times that my money was not enough so we decided to sell food products because it's the most salable in school. There are times that I will produce snacks (i.e. native candies) because I really love cooking but most often we would just purchase in wholesale/retail stores. Unfortunately, my father found out about that so I was forced to stop. My friend continued but stopped later on. As I went to college, I was not supposed to get the course I took. My father wanted me to become an Accountant but I guess I was destined with Entrepreneurial Marketing. My father wanted me to shift the next semester but I failed in my Math 1 subject so I guess my father got disappointed and just let me decide what I wanted. All I want that time was to finish my studies as early as possible so I proceed and graduated at the right time.

Before graduation, I was able to convince my father about the beauty of entrepreneurship that he started reading the business section in newspapers and offered an investment that I used in my food business. He had accepted the risk and told me that it's okay to fail but the money he invested was not enough to pay for my companion and I don't want them to sacrifice for my business so I took a pause. Aside from that reason, I thought my family will help me run the business because that's what they said before I started. I considered them in my business plan but they were not there when I started that made me shed a lot of tears. Despite a lack of support from them, I endured and persevered to succeed. In my first week of operation, I got the trust of my customers and made them permanent buyers who spread positive word of mouth that made my sales and profit increased as time goes by. They also share their thoughts in improving my business which I also follow and they were really helpful. Suddenly my health deteriorated that made my body very weak that I even find it hard to carry my spoon to my mouth. I have experienced a lot of chronic pain that I never felt before.

I got frustrated because I have slowly achieved my purpose in that way but later on I realized that I don't really have to become very rich to help others achieve their dreams, to feed abandoned children and to let others believe in their capabilities. I was once a child who keeps on hiding in my shell because I'm afraid of my father who keeps on judging and discouraging me before so I decided to keep my mouth shut to avoid his anger. Then here comes my friends and teachers who played a vital role in who I am today. They are the people who fill the emptiness I felt in our home.

Tip: Make sure you have understood the instructions before starting making your essay and follow those instructions (such as the font style and size, spacing and the content you must put) as you start writing. It is not necessary to straightly and plainly answer the questions. You must put creativity into it but never go beyond the topic. The content of your essay must end up answering the questions asked when the reader decipher it and always be honest. Many HR Managers have studied Psychology so most probably, they can easily spot untrue statements.

When you are invited for an interview and you are hesitant to attend because of some personal reasons, think twice or more before you decide to decline.

I declined that opportunity given to me, and I regretted that decision I made.
